“Have you been to Spartans? Everybody goes there,” said Diane Thompson, a former teacher at Terra Centre Elementary School. She lives in Springfield now but likes to hang around Burke because it has a “more small town feel.”
Is it always this packed on a Thursday evening at Spartans Family Restaurant in Burke? “We are always pretty busy, weekdays, weekends,” said George Sarantis, son of the establishment’s late owner and founder, Chris Sarantis, “but tonight it was a little different. Tonight, the line started early, at 5:30.”
Like his Greek ancestors, Chris Sarantis could pass on philosophy and wisdom to anyone he came across. “He was very knowledgeable, he’s a very smart person, the smartest person I know, and I know a lot of smart people,” said George Sarantis, his 19-year-old son and George Mason University sophomore. “If he saw that somebody was having a problem, he would sit down with them and try and help them work through it. That’s the type of person he was.”
